Camper Conversion Guide: Paperwork, Requirements and Process

Welcome to our comprehensive guide on Camper Conversions, where we simplify the complex process of converting your van into a cosy, road-worthy camper. Whether you’re a seasoned traveller looking to customise your ride or a newcomer eager to embark on van life adventures, understanding the paperwork and requirements is crucial. Let’s dive into what you need to know.

Introduction to Camper Conversion Paperwork

When considering a camper conversion, the paperwork is vital in ensuring your newly converted vehicle meets all necessary regulations and is recognised legally for use on the road. Our team at SQI specialises in handling the Declaration of Conversion SQI, ensuring a smooth transition from van to camper.

Camper Conversion Requirements

A successful camper conversion involves more than just aesthetics; it must meet specific functional requirements. These include:

– Cooking Facilities: Essential for preparing meals on the go.
– Storage Facilities: To keep your belongings organised and secure.
– Seating & Table Facilities: For dining and relaxation.
– Sleeping Facilities: A comfortable area for rest and sleep.
– Minimum Headroom: At least 1.8 meters (6 feet) in the rear for some insurers, accommodating standing space.
– Invoices for Conversion: Keep all receipts related to the conversion process.

The Conversion Process: Step by Step

Transforming your van into a camper involves a detailed process, from initial paperwork to the final touches that make your vehicle road-ready. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Minimum Conversion Requirements: Ensure your conversion meets the listed requirements for functionality and safety.
2. Paperwork Compilation: Our team efficiently compiles all necessary conversion paperwork.
3. Application to Revenue: Apply to have your vehicle assessed and reclassified from a van to a camper. This includes:
– A fully completed Declaration of Conversion SQI.
– All invoices for the build.
– A set of photos of the camper, both inside and out, as specified on the SQI form.
– A copy of the current logbook.

Send your application to The National VRT Service, Revenue Commissioners, Anne Street, Wexford, Y35 E29K.

4. VRT Pricing: Wait for the Revenue’s response with the VRT price.
5. Payment and Taxation: If agreeable, pay the VRT and follow the Revenue’s instructions for taxing the vehicle.
6. Insurance and CVRT: Ensure your vehicle is insured and passes the Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (CVRT). Finally, tax your vehicle at the local tax office and await your new logbook, marking your vehicle officially as a camper.

Important Notes

– From 01 March 2022, the level of detail required for camper conversion documentation has increased, necessitating more time to process paperwork.
